From the ancient times, Ofunatsu port flourished as an important point for water transportation, and the entrance to Kashima-jingu shrine.

This Torii was rebuilt in June,2013 to withstand all types of weather.

It was made by the Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation.

From the bottom of the river, it is 18.5 meters tall and 22.5 meters wide making it one of the biggest Torii on water in Japan.

古来、西の一之鳥居の建つ大船津は水運による経済や文化の要衝であると同時に鹿島神宮参拝の玄関口であり、江戸時代に歌川廣重の『六十余州名所図會』にも描かれていました。現在の鳥居は平成25年6月に竣工したもので、新日鐵住金株式会社製の耐候性鋼材が用いられています。川底からの高さ18.5メートル、幅22.5メートルで旧鳥居の約2.5倍という壮大なものです。
